An Analysis of the Concept Empowerment


Abstract
The concept of empowerment has been regarded as a core concept of nursing a nd it has been frequently used as one of strategics of nursing care. Nursing has evidenced a long-standing recognition of importance of concept development for th e advancement of nursing theory and practice. confusion surrounds the definition a nd use of the term hope. As with many other nursing concepts, it is a word that is commonly used in colloquial language. This concept analysis aims to identify th e attributes that are essential to the concept of empowerment. and to distinguish between its colloquial and its nursing usage by following the strategy suggested b y Walker and Avant. A review of the literature identifies nursing uses of the term empowerment which reflect and conflict with colloquial uses. The attributes of e mpowerment based on the concept can be defined concisely as follows; 1) problem solving 2) love and concern 3) positive self- image 4) provided strengt h 5) the purpose and meaning in life 6) comfort 7) improvement of quality of life 8) positive self - control
demonstration cases, antecedents, consequences and empirical referents are identiifi ed before a definition of empowerment is developed and proposed for nursing. Thi s clarification of the phenomenon has particular relevance for clinical nursing, the i nstrument of empowerment and the development of empowerment theories.
